Kids ages 6–14, racing in teams of two. Both teammates must be within the age range. Mixed-age teams are allowed — a 7-year-old and a 12-year-old can race together in our Open category.
No. Both team members must be between the ages of 6 and 14. Parent assistance on course is not permitted at any time. This is a kids-only race — that's the point.
Each event is capped at 180 teams per day. The Kids Adventure Race is intentionally small-scale. When it’s full, it’s full. Register early.
Entry for both racers, t-shirt, swag bag, finisher medals, and age-group podium eligibility. Skills Clinics are available as a separate add-on.
2.5–4 miles depending on the venue, with up to 15 natural and man-made obstacles. Courses are designed for the terrain — alpine, desert, mountain, or lakeside. Each one is different. No two races are the same.
Mountain biking, trekking, water navigation, and obstacles. Teams transition between disciplines and checkpoints on course.

Yes. Parents and spectators are allowed on the course to watch and cheer, but they are NOT allowed to assist in the action. Kids make the decisions, solve the obstacles, and earn the finish line themselves.
Teams may attempt each obstacle as many times as they wish, volunteers are stationed at each obstacle to assist if necessary. We want kids to succeed so no team is stopped on course indefinitely.
Yes. Every course is designed specifically for kids ages 6–14 — obstacles are age-appropriate, terrain is vetted for the age group racing, and trained staff are stationed throughout the course. We take safety seriously.
Every athlete must bring a mountain bike, helmet, bike gloves, small backback, water, light snack or energy bar, small first-aid kit, and a lightweight wind/rain jacket. Closed-toe athletic shoes or trail shows are strongly recommended. Sandals and open water shoes are not recommend for treckking, biking, or obstacles.
Mandatory equipment is part of the adventure-racing experience. Kids carry a small backpack with basic items so they learn self-sufficiency, preparedness, and how to move through the outdoors responsibly.
Any team can withdraw at any staffed checkpoint. Race volunteers are positioned at all major transitions and can assist teams that need to stop. There is no penalty for withdrawing — finishing is the goal, but completing safely is always the priority.
Yes. All participants must have a signed waiver on file before race day. Parents or legal guardians sign on behalf of minors. You’ll receive the waiver link in your registration confirmation email.

Bike, helmet and gloves are required for the entire course. A harness (provided on race day) is required at select obstacle sections. Each racer must carry a personal first aid kit, minimum 1 liter of water, and trail snacks. All gear must be carried throughout the race.

Athletic clothing appropriate for outdoor terrain and the venue's climate. Trail running shoes are strongly recommended, avoid sandals and open water shoes. We recommend avoiding cotton — it holds moisture and can become uncomfortable on course.
At select venues with significant water crossings — including Fruita, CO — a US Coast Guard-approved PFD is required. It will be noted clearly on your venue page and in your pre-race packet. We usually have enough PFDs available on race day to provide to each racer, if your child or their teammate does not have one.
Optional pre-race training sessions held at the venue the day(s) before the race. Clinics are taught by experienced coaches and cover mountain biking fundamentals, map reading and navigation, climbing and ropes techniques, and wilderness first aid basics. Kids gain confidence in a fun environment before race day.
No, but highly recommended — especially for first-time The Kids Adventure Race racers or kids newer to any of the disciplines. Clinics are designed to build confidence, not replace preparation. Your team should still train before arriving.
Clinics can be added during registration or afterward through your account dashboard. Spots are limited and fill quickly — add them at registration if you're interested.
Yes. Clinic groups are split by age so content and instruction are developmentally appropriate for younger and older racers. All skill levels are welcome.

Documented medical emergencies, serious injury, or other unforeseeable events may qualify for a refund or credit outside standard policy. Reach out directly and we’ll work with you. Full details are in the Cancellation Policy.
Teams should arrive at least 60 minutes before their assigned start wave. You'll need time to check in, get your bibs, set your bikes in the staging area, pass gear check, attend the athlete meeting, and reach the starting area. Plan to arrive early.
Start waves are assigned by age group. Your wave time will be confirmed in your pre-race packet, sent via email approximately three (3) days before race day.

Any team can signal a course marshal for assistance at any time. Racers are never left unsupported. If a team withdraws, parents are notified immediately at the start finish area.
Gather at the start/finish festival area. Most venues have designated spectator viewing points on course — check your venue page for details. Parents are allowed on course, but are NOT allowed to assist their children. Or you may wait at the finish line, because the look on your kids face when they cross it is worth the whole trip.
